Senior Occupational Therapist

NLN – NUIG

Galway

Fixed Term Contract 6 months, 28 hours

Job Purpose

The Senior Occupational Therapist will be responsible for the development and delivery of therapeutic interventions and strategies to ensure students registered with NUI Galway’s Disability Support Service (DSS) can maximise their learning outcomes and participate fully in their studies.

The Senior Occupational Therapist’s role serves a dual purpose:

· Conducting needs assessments for students registering with NUI Galway DSS, and managing a caseload of students primarily with Mental Health diagnosis, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Physical Disability, or other complex difficulties so they may engage successfully in their studies at NUI Galway

· Providing individual and group occupational therapy support and follow-up to students registered with NUI Galway DSS, and designing and delivering intervention programmes to facilitate independence in education

The Senior Occupational Therapist will provide advice and guidance on disability related matters to university staff, will contribute to the development and review of related policies to ensure compliance with legislation; and will also have a role in developing partnerships with academic and professional colleagues in the NUI Galway community to promote an inclusive learning environment for all students, including those with disabilities

Minimum Education & Skills required

· Hold a qualification approved by the Occupational Therapists Registration Board at CORU

· Current membership of AOTI and CORU

· Recognised professional accreditation in Occupational Therapy by Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland (AOTI)

· 4 years post qualification experience

· Experience working with third level students in an educational environment is desirable

· Satisfactory experience in mental health occupational therapy practice

· Comprehensive knowledge of disabilities and their effects in education

· Knowledge of the legislative framework within which the University is operating

· High level interpersonal, communication, advocacy and facilitation skills

Job Duties & Responsibilities

· Work closely with NUI Galway DSS team to shape the operational development of the OT service ensuring the service meets the needs of the students accessing support

· Complete needs assessments for students registering with NUI Galway DSS to assess student needs on the basis of evidence of disability and put in place supports and reasonable accommodations appropriate to student need

· Manage a caseload of students, with a focus primarily on students registered with primarily with Mental Health diagnosis, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Physical Disability, or other complex difficulties so they may engage successfully in their studies at NUI Galway

· Communicate all relevant issues or concerns to NUI Galway Assistant Disability Officer to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, and the ongoing development of occupational therapy service provision

Additional requirements

· Office base: Usually NUI Galway (Galway city campus), however, working from home and providing remote support will be required during the current COVID-19 environment.

· Knowledge of the range of reasonable accommodations/adjustments available and the appropriate use of such accommodations/adjustments

· Reporting to NUI Galway Assistant Disability Officer

· Know and implement professional boundaries and best practice

· Ability to work under pressure, including working with students at risk and vulnerable students
