About 150 Amazon staff in Ireland affected by global job cuts

Around 150 Amazon employees in Ireland are expected to be affected by the company’s latest round of global job cuts.

The tech giant announced plans to reduce its global corporate workforce by about 14,000 roles, as part of a major restructuring driven in part by the growing adoption of artificial intelligence. Further reductions are expected next year.

Amazon employs roughly 6,500 people across Cork, Dublin and Drogheda in corporate offices, operations sites, data centres and a customer service centre.

In a message to staff, the company said the cuts aim to “reduce bureaucracy, remove layers, and shift resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets.”

Reuters reported that Amazon had been preparing to eliminate up to 30,000 corporate jobs, following extensive hiring during the pandemic.

At the end of last year, Amazon employed about 1.56 million full- and part-time staff globally, including around 350,000 in corporate roles. Over the past two years, it has carried out targeted layoffs across divisions such as Books, Devices and its Wondery podcast business.

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, said the restructuring has already helped teams move faster. She added that hiring will continue to be managed “by reducing in some areas and hiring in others” through 2026.

Affected employees will have 90 days to seek new roles within the company, with internal recruiting teams prioritising their applications.

CEO Andy Jassy has emphasised plans to streamline management and increase reliance on AI. In June, he said the growing use of generative AI tools would reduce the size of Amazon’s corporate workforce over the coming years.

Amazon expects to invest around $118 billion in capital expenditure this year, much of it directed toward AI and cloud infrastructure.
