The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital in Dublin, providing a comprehensive range of acute and specialist services at local, regional, and national levels. It has 745 inpatient beds, 225 day beds, and 16 operating theatres, offering advanced facilities for complex surgical procedures.
The hospital is a Major Trauma Centre and a national referral centre for specialised services including oncology, transplant surgery, cardiology, and colorectal surgery. It is affiliated with University College Dublin and actively participates in education, training, clinical research, and audit programs.
Colorectal and Digestive Surgery at The Mater:
The Mater’s colorectal surgery service manages a high volume of cases including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, pelvic floor disorders, and hernias. It is one of the national rectal cancer centres.
The service offers advanced procedures such as minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery, Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS), and cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC for peritoneal malignancies, a unique service in Ireland. The unit works closely with gastroenterology, oncology, radiology, and nursing teams to provide multidisciplinary patient care.
Role Overview:
The Mater is seeking a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon to join its colorectal and digestive surgery team. The role involves managing both elective and emergency colorectal cases, contributing to multidisciplinary care, supporting service development, and participating in teaching and research activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver specialist colorectal surgical care for patients with benign and malignant conditions.
Perform elective and emergency colorectal surgeries, including laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures.
Participate in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Support audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.
Teach and supervise medical students, surgical trainees, and other healthcare staff.
Participate in on‑call rotas and provide clinical leadership within the colorectal unit.
Essential Requirements:
Eligible for specialist registration with the Irish Medical Council.
Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery or equivalent recognised qualification.
Experience in advanced colorectal surgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques
